TAMASKAN DOG

The Tamaskan arose after a disagreement with the Utonagan, who are in turn a split from the Northern Inuit.

In 2003 a number of Utonagan breeders decided to split off from the Utonagan Society with a small group, and to continue under the name 'British & International Utonagan Society'.

In 2006 the British & International Utonagan Society was dissolved and the Tamaskan Dog Register was established. At the base of the Tamaskan are 4 kennels: Blustag, Blufawn, Alba & Moonstone.

The Utonagan dogs were 'renamed' Tamaskan and the 'Husky' crosses from Finland were added to the breeding stock. The owner of the Polar Speed kennels in Finland where the dogs came from also owned an American Wolf Hybrid and a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog which he used in his breeding program.

Because the genetic basis of the Tamaskan was still very small, a Saarloos Wolfdog was crossed in 2009 and a Siberian Husky in 2010.

In 2012, a number of Tamaskan were DNA tested for 'wolf blood', positive results have emerged which show that the Tamaskan is not completely free of 'wolf blood'. The TDR (Tamaskan Dog Register) then decided to drop the motto, previously used for the breed, “Wolfdog without the Wolf” so as not to mislead people.

With the Tamaskan you can indeed speak of a Wolfdog.
